Porter Fire Department

Mission Statement

We aim to preserve and protect lives and property from loss or damage by fire, to provide firefighting services to Porter and the surrounding communities, to provide education and training to those interested in providing volunteer firefighting services, and to perform acts of community service that will make our community a better place to live.

About Us

Founded in November of 1908, we are a volunteer fire department located in Porter, Indiana along the shores of Lake Michigan. Our firefighters are led into action by Fire Chief Lewis T. Craig Jr., and Deputy Chief Dan Branham. We provide fire suppression (brush and structural), medical assistance, motor vehicle accident response, search and rescue, and dive rescue services to both the Town of Porter and surrounding areas. In our primary response area are the 5,000 residents of Porter, residents of unincorporated Westchester Township, and 200 residents of neighboring Dune Acres, Indiana. In addition, we provide mutual aid services to the neighboring towns of Chesterton, Burns Harbor, and Portage, and 6 smaller townships.   Contained within the coverage area of Porter Fire  Department are both Indiana Dunes State Park and parts of Indiana Dunes National Park, both of which received a combined visitation of over 3.5 million people in 2019. Last year our 19 volunteers ran over 650 calls. We are dedicated to protecting and serving both the people who live in our beautiful community and those who visit it.
