Waverly Road Closure for Bridge Replacement

Porter County will be replacing the Little Calumet River bridge #149 starting on Monday May 13, 2024. Waverly Road will be closed from May 13 to October 25, 2024 for the bridge construction. A detour map is below. The first part of the project will be the removal of the existing pedestrian bridge. That will take place on May 13th; it will take approximately 12 hours to remove the four sections of bridge with a crane. The pedestrian bridge will be taken to Valparaiso where it will be repurposed in other locations by the city of Valparaiso. The existing trail will be relocated to a sidewalk on the new bridge.

The main detour route is Waverly Road to Lincoln Street to Wagner Road. It is suggested that some vehicular traffic might take State Road 49 to Indian Boundary Road to circumvent Porter enroute to Chesterton and vice versa. That will reduce traffic backups on Wagner Road and Beam Street in Porter.
